Classic Guacamole Recipe

When it comes to Mexican appetizers, it is hard to beat classic Guacamole and chips. Creamy, fresh, avocado dip that is packed with flavor.

It is a recipe that is simple, yet tastes amazing every time. Whether you’re serving it with tortilla chips, spooning it over tacos, or adding it to a burrito bowl, guacamole has a way of making everything better.

However when you search for the best way to make it, you will get several different variations. So below, I am sharing how I was taught to make it when I was in Mexico.

This specific recipe doesn’t rely on a long list of ingredients or complicated steps, and it doesn’t overwhelm the natural flavor of ripe avocados. Instead, it focuses on balance. A little acidity from lime juice, just enough salt to bring everything together, and a small amount of onion and cilantro to add freshness without overpowering the dip.

Best of all it’s designed to make just enough to enjoy while it’s fresh. Guacamole is always best the day it’s made, and this amount is perfect for a snack night, to use as a condiment with your favorite Mexican dish or to serve at a small Cinco de Mayo celebration without ending up with a bowl of leftovers turning brown in the fridge.

However before diving into the recipe, it helps to understand what makes great guacamole in the first place and how to choose the right ingredients.

Choosing The Best Avocados For Guacamole

The most important part of guacamole is, of course, the avocado. Using perfectly ripe avocados makes all the difference between a creamy, flavorful dip and one that tastes bland or feels grainy.

Look for avocados that are dark in color and give slightly when pressed gently in the palm of your hand. They should feel soft but not mushy. If the avocado is rock hard, it won’t mash properly. If it feels overly soft or has sunken spots, it’s likely overripe.

Hass avocados are the best choice for guacamole. They have a rich, buttery texture and a flavor that pairs well with lime and salt. For this recipe, two medium avocados are just the right amount to create a satisfying bowl of guacamole without too much excess.

Why Simple Guacamole Is Often The Best

There are countless guacamole variations out there, from versions loaded with tomatoes and garlic to sweet fruit-filled blends with mango or pineapple. While all of those have their place, classic guacamole is hard to beat.

Keeping the ingredient list simple allows the avocado flavor to shine. Lime juice adds acidity and brightness to the dish. Add in a little salt to enhance the natural creaminess, and a small amount of onion and cilantro to provide a bit of flavor without stealing the spotlight.

This classic recipe is one that I love as written but it also makes guacamole incredibly versatile. You can serve it as a dip, spread it on sandwiches or wraps, or use it as a topping for grilled meats or roasted vegetables.

How To Prevent Guacamole From Turning Brown

One of the biggest concerns with guacamole is browning. Avocados oxidize quickly once exposed to air, which causes that familiar brown layer on top.

The most effective way to slow this process is lime juice. The acidity helps reduce oxidation and keeps the guacamole looking fresh longer. Make sure the lime juice is mixed thoroughly throughout the guacamole, not just drizzled on top.

Another helpful trick is to press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole before refrigerating it. Eliminating air contact goes a long way in preserving color. If you do notice slight browning, simply scrape off the top layer and give the guacamole a quick stir underneath. It will still taste fresh.

How To Serve Guacamole For Cinco De Mayo

Guacamole is a must-have for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. It pairs perfectly with margaritas, tacos, quesadillas, and nachos, and it’s one of those dishes everyone expects to see on the table.

This recipe is ideal for smaller gatherings or a Mexican inspired dinner at home. It’s quick to make, easy to scale if needed, and best enjoyed shortly after preparing.

You can prep the ingredients ahead of time, but mash and mix everything just before serving for the best texture and flavor.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 ripe Hass avocados
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (about ½ lime)
  • 2 tablespoons finely diced red onion
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
  • Optional: pinch of ground cumin or cayenne pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and remove the pits. Scoop the flesh into a medium bowl.
  2. Using a fork, gently mash the avocados until mostly smooth with a few small chunks remaining.
  3. Add the lime juice, diced red onion, chopped cilantro, and salt to the bowl.
  4. Stir gently until all ingredients are evenly combined.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed, adding more salt or lime juice if desired.
  6. Serve immediately, or cover tightly with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Easy Variations To Try

While classic guacamole is always a winner, it’s also fun to customize it depending on what you’re serving or who you’re cooking for. These variations start with the same base recipe and add just one or two ingredients for a different flavor profile.

For a spicy version, finely dice a small amount of jalapeño or serrano pepper and stir it in with the onion. Start with a small amount and adjust to taste.

If you enjoy a slightly smoky flavor, add a pinch of ground cumin or smoked paprika. This works especially well when serving guacamole alongside grilled meats or roasted vegetables.

For a chunky style, fold in a few tablespoons of finely diced tomato. Be sure to remove the seeds first to prevent excess moisture from thinning the guacamole.

If you prefer extra creaminess, a tablespoon of sour cream or Greek yogurt can be stirred in. This gives the guacamole a smoother texture while still keeping the avocado flavor front and center.

Storing Leftovers

If you happen to have leftovers, transfer the guacamole to an airtight container and smooth the surface flat. Press plastic wrap directly against the guacamole before sealing the lid. Stored this way, it will stay fresh for up to one day in the refrigerator.

Give it a gentle stir before serving again, and add a squeeze of fresh lime juice if needed to brighten the flavor.
