The Base: Angel Food Cake

The base of these mini fruit trifles is a light and airy angel food cake. With its subtle sweetness and cloud-like texture, angel food cake is the perfect foundation for a dessert that feels indulgent without being too heavy.

It’s also a great base to soak up all the delicious flavors of the fruit and sauce without overpowering them. You can easily find angel food cake at your local bakery or grocery store, or if you’re feeling adventurous, bake one from scratch.

For these trifles, you’ll need about 1 ½ cups of cubed angel food cake if you are making the dessert ‘for two’. However, you can easily double, triple or even quadruple the recipe to make more for your family or friends.

Blueberries and Cherry Lime Sauce

To give our trifles the patriotic blue color, fresh blueberries are the perfect choice. Blueberries are not only deliciously sweet but they are also slightly tart.

Not to mention that their small size makes them easy to eat. Their slightly crisp, yet juicy texture compliments the softness of the angel food cake below. However, if you prefer you could use black raspberries or even blackberries in place of the blueberries.

But the real star in this mini fruit trifle dessert is the homemade cherry lime sauce. Made from fresh cherries, a touch of sugar, and a hint of lime, this sauce brings a little tangy flavor along with a bit of sweetness that balances the flavors beautifully.

The cherries add a deep red hue, while the lime juice brightens the flavor that brings the dessert together.

Here’s a quick look at how to make the sauce:

  1. Prepare the Cornstarch Mixture: Start by combining cornstarch with a bit of water in a small bowl. This will help thicken the sauce without making it too heavy.
  2. Cook the Cherry Sauce: In a saucepan, mix the fresh cherries, sugar, and water over medium-low heat until the sugar dissolves. Then, add the cornstarch mixture and continue to stir as the sauce thickens.
  3. Finish with Lime: Once thickened, remove the sauce from the heat and stir in freshly squeezed lime juice. This step is crucial as it adds a refreshing twist to the sweet cherries.

Make sure to let the cherry lime sauce cool to room temperature before layering it in the trifles. You can even make it a day or two ahead of time and store it in a closed container in the refrigerator.

How To Assemble The Red, White and Blue Mini Fruit Trifles

The best part about this recipe is that it takes minutes to layer the ingredients. In just a few steps you will create a beautiful and delicious dessert to celebrate the holiday. Here are the easy steps to assemble them:

  1. Start with the Angel Food Cake: In a small glass or plastic cup, begin by adding ¾ cup of cubed angel food cake. This will be the base layer that soaks up all the flavors from the sauce.
  2. Add the Cherry Lime Sauce: Spoon about 3 tablespoons of the cherry lime sauce over the cake cubes. Make sure to spread it evenly over the top and sides so that every bite is packed with flavor.
  3. Top with Fresh Blueberries: Next, add ¼ cup of fresh blueberries to each cup. Their iconic blue color and juicy texture make them the perfect addition to the trifles.
  4. Finish with Whipped Cream (optional): Finally, top your trifles with a generous dollop of whipped cream. For an extra festive touch, add red, white, and blue sprinkles.
