Beef and Broccoli Recipe

One of my favorite things to order at an Asian restaurant is Beef and Broccoli. Seared, juicy beef slices and crunchy broccoli that is covered with a sweet, thick glaze and topped with green onions and sesame seeds.

It is so good that sometimes I don’t even eat the rice that comes with it! However, in an effort to eat out less and make healthy meals at home, I haven’t had this popular take out dish in a while.

Therefore, when the craving hit me, I decided to treat myself and make my own version of this recipe. Surprisingly it took me only about 30 minutes to make it and it turned out even better than I expected!

And best of all, it is an easy dinner recipe that is much healthier than what you order at a restaurant. In addition, it will also save you money by making it at home!

Easy Stir Fry Recipe

This quick and easy recipe is basically a stir fry recipe that comes together fast, which is why it is the perfect meal to make on a busy weeknight. You can actually can make it in less time than it takes to drive to your favorite restaurant or to have it delivered.

It is also a great dinner option for those who are looking to eat a healthier diet but without sacrificing the flavor of your favorite restaurant meal. Unlike many restaurants version, this recipe contains no refined sugar, high levels of sodium, or MSG.

However, you still get the classic flavors and textures of a little sticky, a little tangy, a little sweet Asian inspired meal. And it tastes absolutely delicious!

Best of all, it is very easy to make!

BEEF AND BROCCOLI RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb. Tri-tip or Flank steak
  • 1lb Broccoli florets
  • 1/2 half large onion, sliced in thin strips
  • 2 TBSP. Olive Oil
  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • 3 TBSP Cornstarch
  • 3 TBSP Soy Sauce
  • 2 TBSP Maple Syrup/ Honey
  • 1 TBSP Garlic, minced
  • 1 TBSP Ginger, minced

Garnish Ingredients (optional)

  • 1 Green onion, diced
  • 2 TBSP Sesame seeds

More About The Ingredients

1. BEEF

Tri-tip, sirloin or flank steak works best for this recipe.

2. BROCCOLI

Cut the broccoli into florets or purchase florets to make this recipe come together even faster and easier to eat.

3. ONION

It is best to use a sweet onion to add more flavor to the beef and broccoli dish.

4. OLIVE OIL

You will need to use an oil with a high smoke point. Therefore, I prefer to use olive oil, not extra virgin olive oil. However you could also use canola, avocado or grapeseed oil as well.

5. SWEETENER

To keep things lower in carbs, use a low-carb sweetener like Stevia or Monk Fruit. However, if you are not worried about counting carbohydrates, use maple syrup, honey or brown sugar instead.

The sauce is a simple combination of soy sauce, honey, garlic and ginger.

6. BEEF BROTH

As always, use low-sodium beef broth in this recipe. You can always adjust the salt level when serving.

7. SOY SAUCE

Just like the beef broth, use a reduced sodium soy sauce whenever possible. Although you could substitute coconut aminos or tamari sauce if you prefer.

8. CORNSTARCH

Cornstarch is used to coat the beef so that the outer layer has a slight crisp. When you combine it with glaze, it will help to thickening it up. However, you could substitute arrowroot powder if you prefer not to use cornstarch.

9. GARLIC AND GINGER

It is best to use fresh garlic and ginger. Then store the remaining ginger root in the freezer and it will keep for months!

GARNISH INGREDIENTS (OPTIONAL):

Although not absolutely necessary, the sliced green onion and sesame seeds add not only additional flavor but also a nice crunch that pairs perfectly with the beef and broccoli.

I prefer to use a flank steak or a tri-tip steak when making beef and broccoli. They are lean cuts of meat that require very little cooking time.

HOW TO PREPARE THIS RECIPE

1. Just like when making Crispy Orange Beef Stir Fry, prepare all the ingredients before you begin the cooking process as this recipe comes together very quickly. And if you are going to serve this with rice, or any other side dish, then it should also be prepared at the same time.

2. Make the sauce by adding maple syrup or honey (or sugar substitute), soy sauce, garlic and ginger to a small bowl and whisk it until completely blended and set aside.

3. Cut the steak (across the grain) into thin slices. Then place the beef strips in a bowl and sprinkle cornstarch over top and use tongs to help coat the beef completely in the corn starch. This is a crucial step to help the beef brown up nicely and also to help thicken the sauce when everything is combined.

4. Add the oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Then working in batches, add the beef strips to the skillet. Continue to cook until all sides of the beef turn brown. Then place the cooked beef on a plate and finish cooking the remaining beef strips is needed.

5. Using the same skillet, turn the heat to high and pour the broth in the pan. Use a wooden spoon to deglaze the bottom of the skillet, being sure to scrape off any bits that are stuck to the pan. One the pan is deglazed, add the onion and broccoli. Continue cooking for a couple of minutes.

Toss Everything Together

6. Now it is time to combine the beef and broccoli together. Add the cooked beef and the prepared sauce and add them to the broth. Then reduce the heat to medium and cook for about 5 minutes.

Be sure to stir frequently so that everything gets coated in the sauce and the sauce thickens. Cook just until the broccoli is slightly tender but still crispy.

7. Garnish with diced green onion and sesame seeds.

Beef and broccoli is typically served with white rice. However, you can also eat it as a stand alone dish or serve it with cauliflower rice if you are looking for a low-carb option.

STORING LEFTOVERS

Store any leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. This is one of those recipes that may even be just as good, it not even better the second day!

REHEATING INSTRUCTIONS

It is best to reheat leftovers in a skillet. Add a little broth or water to a skillet over medium heat until warmed through. This will take approximately 4-5 minutes.

An easy to prepare beef and broccoli recipe that can be served as a stand alone meal or served over rice.
