If you’re looking for a meal that’s easy to prepare, packed with delicious flavors, and is fairly inexpensive to make then you will love this Crock Pot Cube Steak and Gravy Recipe. It requires just four simple ingredients and only 5 minutes of preparation! In just minutes you will create a meal that’s hearty, satisfying, and perfect for those days when you just want to let the slow cooker do the work.
However, I have to admit that I haven’t always been a fan of cube steak. I have vivid memories of my childhood when I was served a dinner of beef slathered in cream of mushroom soup.
Although I was excited to be served steak, with just one bite I knew that it was going to be a long evening. The meat was so tough that I could barely chew it. In fact, I remember falling asleep at the dinner table because I had to finish my plate before I was excused from the table and I just couldn’t do it.
It took me well into my adult years to gather the courage to make this dish myself. However, with the help of my slow cooker, the meat turned out super tender.
So now, when I am looking for an easy comfort food meal that takes little time to prepare, I turn to this easy recipe.
What Exactly is Cube Steak?
If you are familiar with cube steak, but aren’t sure what cut of beef it is you’re not alone. This steak is most often a cut of top round or top sirloin. However, it has been mechanically tenderized by being pounded with a meat mallet.
This tenderizing process leaves the meat with a characteristic pattern of indentations. These markings that look like small cubes, is how it gets its name. Compared to other cuts of beef it is relatively inexpensive, making it a budget-friendly option.
When cooked properly, it can be incredibly tender and delicious. The result is a dish that tastes far more luxurious than its price tag might suggest.
Why Low and Slow is the Way to Go
Cooking cube steak on low for about 8 hours in the crock pot is the key to achieving that melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. Cube steak can sometimes be tough if cooked quickly. But when you cook it low and slow, the connective tissues break down, transforming the meat into something incredibly tender and flavorful.
Although you might want to speed things up by cooking it on the high heat setting, trust me, patience is the key. Cooking it on low allows the cube steak to become fork tender and it also allows the meat enough time to absorb all the flavors from the dry onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup, and beef broth, resulting in a rich and savory gravy that perfectly compliments the beef.
Crock Pot Cube Steak and Gravy – An Easy “Dump and Go” Recipe
What I love most about this crock pot cube steak and gravy recipe is how simple it is to prepare. This is the ultimate “dump and go” recipe. This simply means that you can toss everything into your slow cooker, set it to cook, and then walk away.
There’s no need for browning the meat or any complex prep work. Simply add the ingredients, cover, and let your slow cooker do all the work. This makes it an ideal recipe for busy weekdays when you don’t have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen.
Once it is time for dinner, you pull the meat out of the crock pot and serve it with your favorite side dish.
Condensed Cream Soup
While cream of mushroom soup is the classic choice for this recipe, don’t feel limited to just that. One of the great things about this dish is that you can switch it up the flavor with the type of soup that you choose.
If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, don’t have any cans in your pantry, or don’t want to spend the time making Homemade Cream of Mushroom Soup, you can easily substitute the soup with other types of condensed cream soups.
For example, cream of chicken soup can add a slightly different flavor while still keeping the dish rich and creamy. Cream of celery soup works well too, adding a subtle note that compliments the beef.
The choice of condensed soup allows you to personalize the dish to your taste preferences or simply use what you have on hand in your pantry. No matter which soup you choose, the result will be a delicious, creamy gravy that ties the whole meal together.
Serving Suggestions
When it comes to serving crock pot cube steak and gravy, there are plenty of options to make it a complete, comforting meal. The most common way to serve it is over a bed of mashed potatoes.
The combination of tender meat, gravy, and creamy potatoes is comfort food at its finest. However, if you’re looking for a change of pace, serve the meat over rice or egg noodles.
To make it a complete meal, add a side of steamed or roasted vegetables. Green beans, carrots, or broccoli are all excellent choices.
However if you are looking for a lighter option, pair the meat with a simple green salad. No matter how you serve it, you will find yourself making this recipe over and over again.
