Easy Pizza Rolls Recipe – An Easy Appetizer Recipe For Two

When you are looking for an easy appetizer recipe for two, it doesn’t get much easier than this Pizza Rolls recipe. Pizza dough topped with pepperoni, sausage, and cheese and rolled into a loaf.

Then it is baked until the dough turns golden brown. Once it comes out of the oven slice it in small sections and serve it with marinara sauce for a delicious appetizer.

However, you can also eat it as a main dish. Instead of cutting the loaf into bite size pieces simply cut the roll in half and you have created a pizza sub!

Pizza rolls are an easy to make appetizer that require just a few ingredients to make. Serve it as an appetizer for game day or keep it whole and serve it as a sub for dinner!

What I love most about this recipe is that it requires very little time to prepare. It requires only 5 ingredients and within minutes, you will have the loaf in the oven baking.

It is a great recipe to make while you watch the Super Bowl or your favorite sports team on television. Or how about a quick and easy hand held appetizer for two on movie night?

These pizza rolls have become one of our favorite pizza night recipes. Just like when we make Pizza Bombs or Pizza Bagels It is a great way to enjoy all the flavors of pizza but in a different way.

Ingredients Needed To Make Easy Pizza Rolls

1. Pizza Dough

Of course any good pizza starts with pizza dough. Although you could make your own homemade pizza dough, I have an easier and faster way to get this delicious appetizer for two on the table.

A tube of refrigerator pizza dough is the base of this recipe. You can find a roll of the pizza dough right next to where you purchase tubes of crescent roll dough and refrigerator biscuits.

They come in a long, skinny roll and each container holds one rectangular pizza dough. All you have to do is open the package and roll the dough into the shape that you want.

However, you can also use frozen pizza dough balls. Just be sure to thaw the dough out completely and then use a rolling pin to roll it into a rectangular shape.

To make things easy purchase refrigerator pizza dough. Once you unroll the dough it will be the perfect shape to make pizza rolls.

2. Sausage

Ground sausage is added to the pizza roll recipe to give the dough a ton of flavor. You can purchase ground sausage or uncooked sausage links and remove the casings prior to cooking it.

Although the most common sausage used is sweet Italian pork sausage, you have other options. If you like spicy foods, choose a hot and spicy sausage.

However if you don’t eat pork you can use ground turkey or ground chicken sausage instead.

3. Pepperoni

Pepperoni is a classic pizza ingredient and we include it in this recipe as well. The key here is to dice the pepperoni slices into small pieces for easy eating.

Again, you can purchase pork, beef, or turkey pepperoni based on your dietary needs.

4. Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

To help bind the sausage and pepperoni inside the pizza dough shredded mozzarella cheese is added to the mixture. I use about 1/2 cup of cheese, however you can add more if you would like.

And if you want more of a robust flavor, use Italian blend shredded cheese. The addition of provolone and Parmesan adds great flavor to the rolls.

Scatter all the ingredients over the top of the dough, leaving a little room on the edges.

5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The oil is used at two different times in this recipe. First the oil is placed in the pan to help brown the sausage.

Then a little more oil is brushed on the pizza dough before the other ingredients are added.

Common Ingredient Substitutions

Another reason why I love this easy pizza roll recipe is that you can switch up the ingredients to make it different every time. For example add a few sliced sautéed mushrooms if you are a mushroom lover.

Or add peppers, onions, or even ham if you prefer! Just be sure to not add anything that is too moist or the pizza dough won’t cook up to be nice and fluffy.

Below I have listed other ingredients that you can put inside the pizza dough.

  1. Sautéed sliced mushrooms
  2. Diced green or red bell peppers
  3. Drained banana pepper rings
  4. Diced sweet onion
  5. Diced ham
  6. Black olives
  7. Anchovies
  8. Fresh diced jalapeños
  9. Diced chicken
  10. Minced garlic

Once the toppings have been added, start at the long side and roll the dough into a loaf. Be sure to pinch the seams and ends closed.

INGREDIENTS

*This recipe will yield approximately 10-12 sliced pizza rolls. If you would like to make fewer rolls, feel free to cut this recipe in half.

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing on the dough
  • 1/2 pound sweet Italian ground sausage
  • 4 ounces pepperoni, diced
  • 4 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 refrigerator pizza dough crust

For Serving:

  • Marinara or Pizza Sauce, for dipping (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat (optional for easy clean up).

Place a medium size skillet over medium high heat. Add the extra virgin olive oil to the pan.

Once the oil is hot add the ground sausage and cook until brown, approximately 8-10 minutes. Let the cooked sausage cool and then transfer to a medium size bowl.

Add the diced pepperoni and shredded mozzarella cheese to the sausage bowl and mix to combine. Set aside.

Roll out the pizza dough into a long rectangle. If you wish you can place the dough on the prepared baking sheet or keep it on the flat surface.

baked loaf of dough
Once the top has turned golden brown in color, remove it from the oven. Let it cool and slice into 1-2 inch sections.

Brush the top surface of the dough with olive oil. Place the pepperoni, sausage and cheese mixture on top of the dough, spreading it out within 1/2 inch of the edges.

Starting at the long edge, roll the dough and press the middle and end seams together to seal. Then use a fork to poke a few holes in the top of the dough so that the steam can escape.

Bake Time Required

Then place the roll on the baking sheet if isn’t already there. Put the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the dough turns light brown.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the roll cool for 3-4 minutes. Then slice it in 1-2 inch sections.

Transfer the pieces to a serving platter and serve warm with warm marinara or pizza sauce. Or if you want to serve it as a meal instead of an appetizer for two, cut the loaf in half and enjoy it as a submarine sandwich!

Enjoy! Mary
