When it comes to quick and easy meals to prepare for two people, it doesn’t get much easier or more delicious than this Hibachi Chicken recipe. It is a dish that blends a variety of tender vegetables and chicken in a classic umami flavored sauce.

Then it is served with fried or steamed rice and a drizzle of Yum-Yum or ginger sauce for a meal that is even better than the one served at your favorite Japanese restaurant. Although if you make it at home you will have to work on your knife and fire skills if you want the true Hibachi dining experience.

However there are many times when I just want to eat the delicious meal and not sit at a common table to watch the show. And that is when I decide to make this dish at home. Now I only head to the restaurant on special occasions.

But if the term “Hibachi” feels intimidating because you don’t have a flat top griddle and you haven’t perfected your knife twirling skills, don’t worry. It’s an easy, quick, simple meal that you can whip up in minutes.

Not to mention that the ingredients are easy to find and you can customize the recipe to your liking. It’s ideal for couples who want the iconic dinner but don’t want the hassle or expense of going out to dinner.

How to Prepare the Chicken

However in order to get the most tender bites of chicken in your Hibachi meal, you first need to marinate the meat. Do this by combining soy sauce, hoisin sauce, garlic and ginger in a small bowl and mix to combine.

Then cut the meat into bite-sized pieces. Place the chicken pieces in a bowl or resealable plastic bag.

Next, pour the sauce over the chicken and ensure each piece is well-coated. Refrigerate the marinated chicken for at least half an hour and up to 4 hours.

Before cooking the chicken, let it sit at room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes. Then cook as instructed in the recipe below.

What is Hoisin Sauce?

Most of us are familiar with soy sauce and how to use it in various recipes. However, if you don’t make a lot of Asian recipes, you may not be as familiar with Hoisin sauce.

Hoisin sauce is a sweet and savory sauce that can be used in a variety of ways, including as a dipping sauce, marinade, or glaze for meat. It’s made from vinegar, soybeans, garlic, and other spices.

You can most often find on it in the international aisle of most grocery stores. Look for it near the bottles of soy sauce and other Asian products.

Be sure to take the time to marinate the chicken before cooking it. The flavor and texture is so much better!

Vegetables Needed for Hibachi Chicken

No matter where you go to get your Hibachi Chicken dinner you will find a variety of grilled and tender vegetables on the plate along with your chicken and rice. However depending on where you go, the variety of vegetables may vary slightly.

Although the most common vegetables to use in Hibachi Chicken are the following:

  • Zucchini
  • Mushrooms
  • Carrots
  • Onions
  • Bell Peppers
  • Broccoli

You can use all of these vegetables or just whatever you prefer. Just be sure to keep the slices small and uniform in size so they cook evenly.

How to Make the Best Fried Rice

The secret to making fried rice is simple and easy. Use day old rice that has been stored uncovered in your refrigerator.

Day-old rice is drier and less sticky compared to freshly cooked rice. This texture is crucial for achieving the desired consistency in fried rice.

The grains of day-old rice are less likely to clump together during the stir-frying process, resulting in a light and fluffy dish. Dry rice also absorbs flavors well, so you’ll get perfectly seasoned rice in every bite.

How To Serve Hibachi Chicken

Hibachi chicken is traditionally served with the vegetables, meat and rice served separately on a dinner plate. However feel free to mix and toss everything together if you prefer.

Then serve it with a side of Yum Yum or Ginger sauce for that authentic Japanese Steakhouse presentation.

Yum-Yum Sauce is a creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet sauce that is a favorite among many. You can purchase it in the condiment aisle at the grocery or make a quick and easy homemade sauce.

Homemade Yum Yum Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tablespoon ketchup
  • 3/4 tsp granulated white sugar
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4-1/2 tbsp water as needed (to thin)

Mix all these ingredients in a bowl until well incorporated. You can drizzle the sauce over the chicken, veggies, and rice or serve it on the side.

How to Store and Reheat Hibachi Chicken

Now that you know how to prepare and cook your Hibachi chicken for two, it’s time to learn how to store and reheat the dish in case there are any leftovers (I doubt it).

Storing

Place the cool leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheating

Place the leftovers on a microwave safe plate. Then add a few drops of water to the dish as the rice will have absorbed some of the moisture.

Reheat for 60-90 seconds or until warmed through. Serve with more Yum-Yum or Ginger sauce.
