If you enjoy the taste of sticky buns, you are going to love this easy to make, short cut recipe. You will be able to enjoy the taste of these popular breakfast and dessert pastries with very little work involved.
Sticky buns are a sweet pastry traditionally made from a yeast-based dough that is rolled out, covered in a sticky caramel glaze, and filled with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. The dough is then rolled up into a log and sliced to make individual rolls.
Once they get put in the oven the glaze caramelizes and becomes sticky and gooey. The buns are most often served warm for breakfast or as a dessert after dinner.
Although they can be called cinnamon nut rolls or caramel rolls depending on the specific region where they are made, the hallmark of a good sticky bun is the sticky, caramelized glaze that covers the top of the pastry. However most of them will also have a nut topping as well.
No matter how they are made, I am sure that you are going to love them. Especially when you make them with this easy recipe!
Why You Will Love These Sticky Buns
1. Satisfy Any Sweet Tooth: These pastries have the perfect balance of sweetness that is sure to crave a sweet tooth. They also have a rich, indulgent flavor that many people find irresistible.
2. Comfort Food: Although many people think of Meatloaf, Chicken Noodle Soup, or Pot Roast as comfort food, eating a warm, sweet bun can also be comforting on a cold or rainy day. It can also be exactly what you need to lift your mood after a difficult day.
3. Reward Food: Because you don’t make or eat them every day, when you sink your teeth into one you will immediately feel like you are indulging in a special treat.
4. Easy Recipe: Although you could make Homemade Cinnamon Roll dough from scratch, this recipe uses a very important short cut. Instead of making the dough, this recipe uses a tube of refrigerator cinnamon rolls as the base to the recipe. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
5.Versatile Recipe: Even as a short cut recipe you can add different types of nuts, dried fruit, or other flavors to the topping to make them even more delicious.
What Type of Nuts To Use To Make Sticky Buns
The type of nuts that you can use for the topping is a matter of personal preference based on taste and texture. Below I have listed some common types of nuts used to make this sweet treat even better.
- Pecans: Pecans are the most popular choice because of their slightly sweet, nutty flavor and a crunchy texture.
- Walnuts: Walnuts are another popular choice as well. They add a slightly bitter, nutty flavor and have that classic crunchy texture. They are often used as the sole nut of choice or in combination with pecans.
- Almonds: Almonds can be used however it would be best to use sliced, slivered or diced almonds instead of whole almonds.
- Hazelnuts: Although not as commonly used hazelnuts also have a sweet, nutty flavor that pairs well with the caramel glaze.
No matter what nut that you choose it is important to chop the nuts so that they can stick to the top of the buns easily. And if you want even more flavor you can also toast the nuts before adding them to the mixture.
Helpful Recipe Tips
1. Before starting the recipe have the ingredients measured and ready to go. This easy sticky buns recipe comes together very quickly so it is important to have everything near by.
2. Use a push measuring cup to measure the corn syrup. Instead of using a standard measuring cup, a push cup will allow you to get the entire amount of corn syrup out that you need, without making a mess.
3. Have a timer nearby. You will need to have a kitchen timer or your cell phone timer set for exactly 1 minute so that the caramel can become the perfect consistency. It is best to pre-program the timer so all you have to do is push start when you are ready.
4. You will need a plate that is large enough to cover the top of the baking dish for serving. As soon as the buns come out of the oven carefully place the plate on top and flip it over to release the buns from the baking dish.
