What Type of Onion To Use
When making this Fried Onion Dip, choosing the right type of onion can make all the difference in the flavor. A large yellow onion works best for this recipe, as it has the perfect balance of sweetness and sharpness that pairs well with the other ingredients.
However yellow onions also caramelize beautifully, creating a rich flavor that takes this dip to the next level. Of course, you could also choose a white or sweet Vidalia onion if that is what you have on hand.
The Keys To Caramelizing Onions
Caramelizing onions is an essential step in creating a this Fried Onion Dip. Just like when you make French Onion Chicken to achieve perfectly caramelized onions, start by cooking them over medium heat with butter and oil until they soften.
Then, reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to cook for an additional 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The onions should turn a deep golden brown color, with their natural sugars developing a rich, sweet taste.
What you want to avoid is cooking the onions at too high of a temperature. They need to be cooked low and slow so that the sugars in the onion can caramelize, creating that delicious and unique flavor.
Assembling The Dip
When assembling the Fried Onion Dip, there are a few crucial steps to ensure the best results.
First, make sure the caramelized onions have cooled completely before adding them to the mixture. This will prevent the dip from becoming too thin.
Additionally, use room temperature cream cheese so that it can blend smoothly when mixed with the other ingredients. Then when you go to add the caramelized onions, you can either fold them in the dip or mix them with a hand mixer.
Although if you do use a hand mixer, be sure to scrape the bottom edge of the beaters as some of the onions may tangle around the edges.
How & What To Serve With Fried Onion Dip
Fried Onion Dip is best served at room temperature, allowing the flavors to meld and the dip to have the perfect consistency. If you aren’t going to eat it right away, be sure to cover and place it in the refrigerator.
When it comes to what to serve with the dip, you have plenty of options! Some great choices include chips, toasted baguettes, crackers, or an array of vegetable slices such as carrots, celery, and bell peppers.
Feel free to get creative and pair the dip with your favorite items!
How To Store
