If you are looking for a quick, easy and healthy meal, you are going to love this Egg Roll In A Bowl Recipe. It has all the flavors of the inside of an egg roll but instead of being an appetizer, it is a complete meal.
Best of all it is made entirely in one skillet and ready to eat in under 20 minutes! It is the perfect recipe to make on a busy weeknight.
Not to mention that it is naturally a low-carb, Keto friendly meal. Which is an added bonus for those who want to limit their intake of carbohydrates, but still want a delicious and flavorful dinner.
However, don’t limit yourself to making this recipe for dinner. Because this recipe is so versatile, it also makes for a great lunch and breakfast.
For instance, instead of using ground pork, chicken or turkey, use ground sausage to make it for breakfast. Add a scrambled egg to the mixture and you have a complete Asian inspired breakfast that tastes fantastic!
What Makes This Recipe Taste So Good
Although the list of ingredients looks rather long for such a simple recipe, there are some basic Asian inspired flavors which makes this egg roll in a bowl recipe taste so good.
Just like when I make Vegetable Lo Mein, the sauce begins by combining soy sauce, sesame oil and rice vinegar. Then add in a little garlic and ginger which gives it that classic Asian taste.
However, the real flavor comes when the hoisin sauce is added to the mixture. Hoisin sauce is much thicker and sweeter than soy sauce.
It has both a tangy and sweet flavor that is made by a combining fermented soybean paste, garlic, vinegar, chiles, sesame oil and sweeteners. And it adds a deliciously unique flavor to this recipe.
You can find a jar of hoisin sauce at most large grocery stores. It is most often found in the ethnic food aisle close to where you find soy sauce.
However, if you can’t find it at the grocery, you have two options. The first option is that you can omit it and make the recipe without it.
Your dinner will still taste delicious. However if you happen to have teriyaki sauce on hand you can add that and a pinch of brown sugar to the mix to give it that sweet and tangy flavor.
Then add one additional clove of garlic and you will get that familiar hoisin taste that makes this recipe so good!

Helpful Recipe Tips
1. Ground Meat
Depending on the type of ground meat that you are using, you may need to add a little extra virgin olive oil to the skillet before browning. The more lean the meat that you use the more that it will stick to the bottom of the pan.
Although you only need 1/2 pound of ground meat to make this egg roll in the bowl recipe, go ahead and brown the entire pound of meat that you most likely purchased.
Then reserve half of the cooked meat for another recipe throughout the week. It will save you time when you make Ground Beef Stroganoff or Tater Tot Casserole later in the week.
2. Onion
For your reference, 1/2 cup of diced sweet onion equals approximately half of a medium size onion. However, if you can’t tolerate the strong flavor of onions, use 2 diced green onions instead.
3. Fresh Garlic vs. Minced Garlic
If you prefer to have a jar of minced garlic in your refrigerator rather than using fresh garlic cloves, than substitute 1/2 teaspoon of the minced garlic for the one garlic clove that is called for in this recipe.
Although I prefer the taste of fresh garlic cloves, sometimes it is difficult and time consuming to mince garlic yourself. Even though I use a garlic press to mince garlic, sometimes I don’t always have fresh cloves on hand.
And that is when the jar of minced garlic that sits in my refrigerator comes in handy!
4. Coleslaw Mix
There are several different bags of coleslaw mix available for purchase. Be sure to purchase standard coleslaw mix that has shredded cabbage and carrots only.
Some bags include broccoli, snow peas, and other various ingredients that may alter the flavor in this egg roll in a bowl recipe.
Although, it is okay if the bag of coleslaw mix contains both shredded green and purple cabbage and carrots. And of course if you want to shred your own cabbage and carrots, you certainly can!
5. Shredded Carrots
I always have a bag of shredded carrots in my refrigerator, especially in the summer. It is a great shortcut to use in salads or when making Carrot Cake Cupcakes.
However, if you have baby carrots or standard size carrots simply shred them using a box grater or a food processor that has a grating blade attachment.
