Now that the weather is turning cooler, many of us are indulging in warming comfort foods like chili with dinner rolls, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and spaghetti with four cheese garlic bread.
It is the time of the year when we enjoy the type of foods that not only help our bodies warm up, but also keep us full for hours. However, with food prices at an all time high, some of those foods may no longer earn a spot in our grocery carts.
For instance, we still will make a bowl of chili. However instead of purchasing rolls from the bakery to enjoy with it, we may opt to enjoy it a few saltine crackers instead.
And when it comes to spaghetti, we may skip purchasing the expensive box of frozen garlic bread and opt to make our own garlic knots or homemade garlic bread instead.
You can still get the same enjoyment from the meal, but save money in the mean time. And in an effort to use whatever grocery items that are in my kitchen and not let them go to waste, that is exactly how I came up with this four cheese garlic bread recipe.
Use What You Have In Your Kitchen
Every week when I plan what we are having for meals, I try to make sure that I use all of the ingredients that I purchase. And when you are cooking for two, sometimes that can be difficult.
For instance, if I am making Chicken Broccoli Stuffing Casserole for dinner using the meat from a rotisserie chicken, I know that I will need to make a few other recipes with the extra chicken. Whether I make Chicken Pot Pie dinner or Barbecue Chicken Wraps for lunch, my goal is to not let anything go to waste.
So when I found myself with the remaining loaf of Texas Toast bread after making Strawberry Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast for a special occasion breakfast, I knew I would have to find a use for it before it turned moldy.
What is Texas Toast?
Many of you have heard the term ‘Everything is Bigger in Texas’. Although this saying originally referred to the geographical area of the state, it is now used for everything within the state boundaries as well.
And if you have ever been to a Buc-ee’s travel station you will know what I mean. And with keeping with the bigger is better theme, Texas toast is no exception.
This bread originated when a restaurant owner in Texas wanted to wow his guests with bread that was sliced at double the size of a normal loaf of bread. However, the bread would not fit in a standard size toaster.
Therefore, the bread was buttered on both sides and toasted on a griddle. And there the term Texas toast was developed.
Because of its thick nature, it is most often served alongside meals that have a sauce or gravy. The bread is used to soak up the juices during and at the end of the meal.
Now you can find the bread slathered in garlic butter and sometimes topped with cheese and packaged under the same name. And if you have ever had Four Cheese Garlic Texas Toast you understand how delicious it is.
So when I found myself with extra pieces of the thick slices of bread, I knew exactly what to make!
Four Cheese Garlic Bread Recipe
*A printable recipe card is located at the bottom of this article which contains the specific measurements, temperatures and cook times. However, continue reading below to learn about more helpful tips about this specific recipe.
INGREDIENTS
- 4 slices Texas Toast or thick sliced French bread
- 4 cloves garlic, minced and then crushed
- 4 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon chopped parsley leaves
- 1 cup shredded 3-cheese blend, Mozzarella, Monterey Jack, and Cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese
INSTRUCTIONS
Start by preheating the oven to 400°F (200°C). Then line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
*Side Note – I used to use parchment paper to line my baking sheets whenever I was baking something. However, this got rather expensive to purchase parchment paper over and over again.
Therefore I finally made the jump and purchased these Silicone Baking Mats. And now I wished I had done it years ago!
They can be cut down to fit perfectly inside of baking sheets and can be used over and over again. Best part of all, they are easy to wash!
And now that baking season is among us, I know I will be saving money by not purchasing disposable parchment paper over and over again.
Place the Texas Toast bread slices on the prepared baking sheet. Set the bread aside while you prepare the garlic butter that will be slathered on the Four Cheese Garlic Bread.
In a small bowl add the melted butter, garlic, and parsley leaves. Stir well to combine.
Then use a pastry brush to brush the garlic butter mixture on the top surface of the bread. Evenly sprinkle the 3-cheese blend shredded cheese on top of each slice.
Then sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top of the other cheese. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven on the middle rack.
Bake Time
Bake for approximately 10-12 minutes. You want the cheese to melt and the bread to turn light golden brown around the edges.
Remove the baking sheet from the oven and serve warm.
